"We need business to give practical meaning to the values and principles that connect cultures and people everywhere." —Ban KI-moon, Secretary-General to the United Nations
"The UN Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
Good Business International, Inc supports the ten principles of the UN Global Compact."
A WONDERFUL THING HAPPENED at the United Nations at the end of the 20th century, the UN Global Compact was created. Secretary-General Kofi Annan addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 1999 and called for the formation of a "Global Compact" between the world business community and the United Nations. Officially launched in June of 2000, the UN Global Compact calls for the involvement of “civil society” in United Nations human rights initiatives. Many human rights issues stem from economic practices that result in the pollution of water, air and land, cruel and unusual labor practices, human slave trading, child labor, corruption, world hunger, global poverty, violence against women, child prostitution, ethnic persecution, genocide, and disease. These are just some of the many human crimes that evolve from inhumane economic practices. In 2000, after decades of trying to affect change in these abuses, the United Nations under Secretary-General Annan recognized that in order to accomplish greater and lasting change in global business practices, civil society must partner in the initiative. In the eight years since the UN Global Compact formed, its vast partnership with civil society and private business has expanded enormously. The torch has passed to current Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Global Compact (GC) is continuing to improve its reach and effectiveness. Good Business International (GBI) supports the work of the United Nations Global Compact and its goals for responsible business. GC initiatives are directly in line with GBI’s Five Star Approach to Good Business. Our goal at GBI is the global business community to acknowledge its responsibility in world affairs and do its part to help create a more humane world. The United Nations Global Compact in its own words: "What is the UN Global Compact? The Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption . As the world's largest, global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact is first and foremost concerned with exhibiting and building the social legitimacy of business and markets." www.unglobalcompact.org |
